PART-TIME COOK
The Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center is seeking a part-time Cook responsible for preparing and serving meals for large groups following a USDA-approved menu. Position requires thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in preparing foods on a large scale. Comprehensive knowledge of the use and care of utensils and equipment, health/ sanitation practices, and health department standards is required. Preferred qualifications include a food handler’s card and ServeSafe certification. This position is on-call and requires flexibility to work shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Requires at least 2 years’ experience in food service operations, a background investigation to include criminal history, child protective services, sex offender registry records checks, and drug screen. COUNSELOR III
The Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center, serving our community’s at-risk youth since 1997, is seeking a Counselor III, also referred to as senior counselor/rover, for day/evening shift to provide direct supervision of juvenile detainees, admissions and releases, control room operation, medication agent duties, and crisis intervention. The incumbent serves as assistant to the shift supervisor and may be solely responsible for the operations of the Center in the supervisor’s absence. The position provides training for new direct care staff and supports daily shift activities, including the oversight of consistent application of a complex therapeutic behavior management program. The position is subject to on-call 24 hours a day and works shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifications: A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an associate’s degree and two (2) years experience working with youth; or a high school diploma and four (4) years experience working with juveniles in a residential facility including staff supervisory duties.
This position requires a background investigation to include criminal history, child protective services, sex offender registry records checks, and physical exam with drug test. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia driver's license in accordance with Virginia DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.
ENTRY SALARY: $55,000+, based on education and experience
This position also has a $2/hr weekend differential for weekend hours worked.

FULL-TIME & PART-TIME YOUTH DETENTION SPECIALIST POSITIONS
The Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center, serving our community’s at-risk youth since 1997, is seeking dedicated Direct-Care Detention Specialists to join our team of professionals. Our Detention Specialists are the front-line staff working with youth in the Center. WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Supervise the security and welfare of youth during their daily activities that include: school, recreation, meals, hygiene, and other daily scheduled activities
- Implement the outlined behavior management program
- Assess emergency situations and respond to crisis
- Facilitate cognitive behavioral group sessions and activities
- Work independently and make decisions based on established policy and procedures
- Serve as a role model for youth

PART-TIME ENTRY SALARY: $20.67 per hour, based on education and experience
FULL-TIME ENTRY SALARY: $45,142, based on education and experience

ON-CALL TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST
The Merrimac Center is currently accepting applications for the position of ON-CALL transportation specialist/driver. Position involves transporting youth to court hearings and medical appointments. Driver is responsible for the secure and safe transport of youth to and from these meetings. Shift work is primarily day shift but may include an occasional evening, weekend, or holiday. Experience working with at risk youth preferred. Requires maintaining a valid Virginia Driver’s License, passing a background check, drug screen, and post-offer physical. Hourly rate $20.67.
