                   COUNSELOR III (Senior Counselor / Intake Rover)


                  Merrimac Center, a secure juvenile detention center, is seeking a Counselor III, also referred to as senior counselor/rover, for day/evening shift to provide supervision of juvenile detainees, admissions and releases, control room operation, medication agent duties, and crisis intervention. The incumbent serves as assistant to the shift supervisor and may be solely responsible for the operations of the Center in the supervisor’s absence.  The position provides training for new direct care staff and supports daily shift activities, including the oversight of consistent application of a complex therapeutic behavior management program.  The position is subject to on-call 24 hours a day and works shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.


                  Minimum Qualifications: A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an associate’s degree and two (2) years experience working with youth in a residential facility including supervisory duties; or a high school diploma and four (4) years experience working with youth in a residential facility including staff supervisory duties.


                  This position requires a background investigation to include criminal history, child protective services, sex offender registry records checks, and physical exam with drug test. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia driver's license in accordance with Virginia DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.  Starting salary is $52,257+ based on education and experience, as well as a competitive benefits package including participation in the Virginia Retirement System.

                  DEPUTY DIRECTOR


                  Merrimac Center, a secure juvenile detention center located in Williamsburg, Virginia is seeking a Deputy Director responsible for assisting the Director in all aspects of the detention center’s operations. While protecting public safety, Merrimac Center is a therapeutic juvenile detention center providing youth with skills and behavior management through evidence-based services including Cognitive Behavioral Training.  More information on the Center may be obtained by visiting External link opens in new tab or windowwww.merrimac-center.net.  This executive-level professional position performs difficult and complex tasks related to all programming and various support components required for the daily operation of the center including supervision of shift supervisors, line staff, medical services, training, and mental health contract services. Responsibilities also include liaising with Department of Juvenile Justice representatives. The Deputy Director serves as backup in the absence of the Director, is on call 24 hours a day in the administrator on-call rotation, and is required to be reached by telephone.  The position requires the ability to work a flexible work schedule. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Executive Director. A bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of professional experience in an adolescent residential facility as well as three years in an administrative or supervisory capacity required.  Master’s degree preferred.  Any combination of education and experience listed above to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

                  FULL-TIME & PART-TIME OVERNIGHT DETENTION SPECIALIST POSITIONS


                  The Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center, serving our community’s at-risk youth since 1997, is seeking a dedicated, part-time, Overnight Direct-Care Detention Specialist to join our team of professionals. Our Detention Specialists are the front-line staff working with youth in the Center.


                  WHAT YOU WILL DO:

                  • Supervise the security and welfare of youth during the overnight shift via room checks
                  • Supervise youth during morning hygiene, breakfast, school, and other daily scheduled activities during waking hours
                  • Complete laundry duties
                  • Write court reports and complete other routine paperwork
                  • Implement the outlined behavior management program
                  • Assess emergency situations and respond to crisis
                  • Facilitate cognitive behavioral group sessions and activities
                  • Work independently and make decisions based on established policy and procedures
                  • Serve as a role model for youth


                  * Ability to perform physical restraints when necessary using the "Handle with Care" techniques is required


                  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

                  Minimum Qualifications: A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an associate’s degree and two (2) years experience working with youth; or a high school diploma and four (4) years experience working with youth.  Experience working with juveniles in a residential facility preferred.

                  This position requires a background investigation to include criminal history, child protective services, sex offender registry records checks, and physical exam with drug test.  Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia driver's license in accordance with Virginia DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.


                  FULL-TIME SCHEDULE:

                  This position works a set schedule each week, which consists of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The shifts are 10 hour shifts (10 p.m. – 8 a.m.). Scheduled days include weekends and holidays.


                  PART-TIME ENTRY SALARY:  $20.67 per hour, based on education and experience

                  FULL-TIME ENTRY SALARY:  $42,993, based on education and experience

                  ON-CALL TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST


                  The Merrimac Center is currently accepting applications for the position of ON-CALL transportation specialist/driver. Position involves transporting youth to court hearings and medical appointments. Driver is responsible for the secure and safe transport of youth to and from these meetings. Shift work is primarily day shift but may include an occasional evening, weekend, or holiday. Experience working with at risk youth preferred. Requires maintaining a valid Virginia Driver’s License, passing a background check, drug screen, and post-offer physical. Hourly rate $19.69.
